Estimate the annual cost

Use loaded engineering cost if possible: salary plus taxes, benefits, equipment, and other employment costs.

Choose the currency used for engineer cost. The calculator does not convert exchange rates.
Count only people whose work is meaningfully affected by this debt. If the problem affects one team of 8, enter 8 rather than the whole engineering organization.
The company's full monthly cost for one engineer: salary plus payroll taxes, benefits, equipment, and other direct employment costs. If you do not know the exact number, use a reasonable team average.
Estimate the share of working time spent specifically working around debt: legacy code, slow builds, brittle tests, manual fixes, avoidable rework, and similar friction.
Average incidents per month where technical debt was a cause or significant contributing factor. Do not simply enter all production incidents.
Total engineering effort across everyone involved in diagnosis, repair, recovery, and follow-up. Two engineers spending 4 hours each equals 8 engineering hours.
Total extra engineering effort caused by difficult releases, migrations, rework, and other debt-specific delivery friction. Enter additional team effort, not calendar waiting time.

Avoid double counting. If incident or delivery hours are already included in your productivity-loss estimate, set those fields to zero or reduce them accordingly.

Technical debt becomes easier to prioritize when it has a cost

Technical debt is rarely just a code-quality problem. It consumes engineering time, slows changes, increases operational work, and competes with product delivery.

This calculator deliberately keeps the model simple. The goal is not to manufacture precision, but to create a defensible first estimate that can start a better prioritization conversation.
